Synonym for workmate Colleague is someone who shares your profession, and you interact. Workmate is someone who works at the same place as you, and you work together. It's easier to understand if you think of a university. All the professors can say they are colleagues, since the are all professors and they have to interact at meetings and such. But they aren't all workmates. They may work in different departments and buildings. Also a science professor at one university may call another professor at a different university a colleague if they share work together. For example by sharing information on a topic they both are researching.|"workmate" isn't used. A person who works in the same location as you is a co-worker.
