The Stake is useful for dealing damage to enemies, primarily because of the bleed damage it deals. A slash with the Stake deals about 23 damage (including bleeding damage). Stake has a fast charge meter, and if charged enough it'll impale the target instead of slashing them, meaning you will lose your stake and it will suffer a higher durability cost.
