from the album Hyrule Highlands II - Music from Tim de Man
Song of Storms has crossed the threshold from “iconic” to “overdone” a long time ago, but I love it so much that I still wanted to do it. So the question became: what can I add to the canon of Song of Storms? It’s especially tricky if you consider how short the piece actually is. In essence this track draws from the same aesthetic as the other Ocarina arrangements, so no orchestrations: it’s just a lotta Tims. In this case: a choir of singing ones, a group of nyckelharpa playing ones, multiple guitar hacking ones - on top of the regular drums, bass, whistles, accordion & percussion. Whew. The goal of this Tim overload was to have plenty of options in varying instrument groups, so that I could eke out all I could from the little nugget of Kondo goodness. We’re starting out with nyckelharpa, drums and guitar, after which we get choir and whistle. From here we start changing keys to keep the track going round and round in fresh ways, ultimately giving way to some sweet improvised soloes. Imagining an audience at a French Bal Folk waltzing to this, I think I’ve done a reasonable job!
