Ptolemy I Soter, “The Savior”, (ca. 367 BC – ca. 283 BC) was a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great, ruler of the Egypt (323 – 283 BC) and founder of the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, or Lagides’ dynasty. He was king of the Egypt from 305 to 283 BC. This carved portrait was identified as Ptolemy Soter by comparison with his image from coins struck under his reign. The nose, the head with the royal crown, the neck and the bust are modern restorations.
