In a symbolic ceremony, clothing worn by recently-freed child abductees is burned at the Rachele Rehabilitation Center June 4, 2005 in Lira Town, Lira District, northern Uganda. A counselor then leads the children in a prayer, finishing with "The ghost has gone back to the bush." The children then respond, "He is gone!" The center hosts children that were rescued or escaped from the Lords Resistance Army. Over the last 19 years the rebel LRA has kidnapped thousands of children and forced them to become child soldiers or sex slaves. The children at the Rachele center are given a safe place to stay while their wounds -- both physical and emotional -- are tended to and their families are located.
