Martin George Bean, born in Australia on 26 October 1964, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of The Open University (OU) from 1 October 2009 to December 2014. He was the fifth VC of the OU. In January 2013, Martin Bean opened the 2013 programme of Business Breakfast meetings at the OU Business School (OUBS). He spoke about the role higher education plays in stimulating economic growth and the importance of developing stronger relationships with business at regional, national and international levels. Martin discussed the opportunities and challenges presented by technological developments, the need for constant evolution and innovation, and how the OU was working with some of the UK’s biggest employers to deliver the skills needed to get the economy moving again.
