A second anime season for Akane Shimizu's Hataraku Saibou (Cells at Work!) manga on Saturday was announced at the Aniplex booth at AnimeJapan 2019. Shimizu began the comedy manga in Shounen Sirius magazine in January 2015. Kodansha published the fifth volume in August 2017. Hataraku Saibou has a cumulative 2.5 million copies of its compiled volumes in print. Shigemitsu Harada launched a "darker side" spin-off manga Hataraku Saibou Black with illustrations by Issei Hatsuyoshiya in Morning magazine in June 2018. The third volume went on sale on February 22. David Production adapted the manga into a 13-episode TV anime in Summer 2018. The anime series was followed by a special episode that aired on December 27 last year. Kodansha Comics licensed the manga in English in March 2016 and shipped the fifth volume in November 2017.
