The Cosmotron at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, was the first proton sychrotron to come into operation, in 1952. The protons were first accelerated to 3 MeV in a Van de Graaf generator (the cylindrical tank in the foreground). They then travelled through the pipe to the doughnut of the main accelerator, where they were raised to an energy of 3 GeV. The Cosmotron ceased operations in 1966.
