Colorized photo from 1943, MarchOriginal title: New York Times on a rainy dayPhotographer: John VachonLocation: 200 W 47th StMy overall goal here was to make a dark and yucky day, into something people recognize. Mostly when it rains and I happen to be out, the only things I really focus on are bright colorful lights. And that's the look I was going for. Lit signs, movie theaters attracting attention, the reflection on the street. Bright taxis everywhere, and they really are everywhere. I think every single car here is a taxi of some kind, even the orange one, as there were faint marks on the doors. I happen to have a few KodaChrome images from this exact are and time, and those were the colors they showed them to be. Note the black out head lights. During the wartime, they had to cover windows and lights with black out curtains. The lights had a small slit at the top where you could see the light. But I doubt it lit the road that well. Some lights had a hood over that. See the traffic lights? Those are black out also, you can only see a small plus in the green light. The plus was at the very top of the light near that hood. Red would have small dot and the yellow if there was one would have a V on it. It's hard to believe how empty this place is. Today, I don't think any of these buildings survived, if they did they are under a lot of signs. There also seems to be a subway entrance here, that I didn't see on the map.
